If you are an avid player of the game Civilization 5 you may have, at one time or another, wondered about how accurately Civilization 5 portrays the strengths and history of the civilization that you are playing. You'd like to find out if it is accurate, but perhaps you just have not cared enough to actually do the research yourself. Luckily for you, that is not necessary. On this page we will be covering the historical accuracy of the game's portrayal of England in the video game Civilization 5. It was discovered that qualities most important to England during Queen Elizabeth's reign such as commerce, maritime activity, and maritime exploration were very true to life. The game was found to be accurate overall. For both game, and historical purposes, we have decided to also focus on the Social Policy branch Commerce.

Queen Elizabeth I, Wise Ruler Over England.
Queen Elizabeth I was the leader chosen to rule England in the game Civilization 5. She was a crucial part of English history, and made many revolutionary changes in England during her reign. Consistent with reality, Civilization 5 portrays Queen Elizabeth as a strong and competent leader. She allowed England's Navy to expand and chose leaders like Sir Francis Drake to help defeat the Spanish Armada. Queen Elizabeth also made many changes in the way England's commerce functioned. She commanded many sailors and explorers to go exploring the more "unknown" areas of the world, which allowed England to bring back and sell goods from all over the world.
England was growing rapidly during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, which Civilization 5 accurately depicts. In the game, England has the perk called "Merchant Navy policy" which adds +3 production in all coastal cities. This would be very helpful in both the game and in old England because many of the country’s cities are coastal. Queen Elizabeth allowed England to flourish by sending sailors to explore unknown areas of the world, and bring back the unique goods which could be found there. The Queen's involvement in England's navy and sailors helped England obtain rare and important goods, unavailable to it's competing countries. Civilization 5 accurately depicts Queen Elizabeth's involvement in maritime activity by giving England many naval advantages.

The Rulers of The Sea
The game Civilization 5 accurately depicts England's ability to rule the sea by using the social policy Naval Tradition which gives them the ability to use +1 movement for all naval units and +1 sight for naval combat units. This would have been helpful for England during the war against Spain and would have given them the upper hand when approaching an enemy combatant at sea. England's large fleet of ships also allowed them to travel to many foreign and 'untraveled' lands. Doing so made it so they could bring back different types of foods, linens, and other goods. Essentially, England's success can be attributed to the ability to travel to different lands to collect and sell different provisions from all over the world. Naval warfare was England's specialty when fighting their enemies, consistent with naval traditions sight bonus for combat units. They had a very powerful navy, and maritime activity was key to many of England's successes during the rule of Queen Elizabeth. Civilization 5 accurately depicts the use of maritime activity during Queen Elizabeth's reign, by giving England special abilities like the Merchant Navy, Ship of The Line, and The Sun Never Sets policies. All of these policies demonstrate England's strong navy, and uses for maritime travel and trade. England had the strongest Navy in the world at that time, and it's power gave them the upper hand in warfare, trade, exploration, etc.
Sir Francis Drake
Sir Francis Drake was one of England's most trusted and valued sailors and adventurers. He played a crucial role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada and traversed the world to benefit England. In Civilization 5, Drake is not mentioned, which is a major flaw. Because Civilization 5 focuses so much on England's maritime activity, it was foolish not to at least mention one of the most important figures in English Maritime history.

Using Commerce
Now that we've bored you with a bit of history, we will now discuss how you can win with England by focusing on the Social Policy Commerce. England's policy The Sun Never Sets gives plus one movement for all naval units. This is VITAL to your success because it means that you must focus directly on getting your first ships right away, so you can get the full ocean maps before anybody else in your game can even think about making ships. Having a better sense of the map not only puts you at an advantage, but also makes automatic trade routes for the rest of the game, which you will find are extremely useful.
